Love it or hate it, SPAM has been showing up on lunch plates for generations. Made from pork, spices, and a recipe Hormel keeps pretty close to the vest, the famous canned meat rolls off the production line at an astonishing rate. We’re talking tens of thousands of cans every hour.

Hormel, the company behind SPAM, is headquartered in Austin, Minnesota. Back in 1991, they opened a small company museum in a local mall. Visitors were interested in the company’s history, but they were really there for one thing: SPAM.

The museum proved so popular that it eventually got its own building, and in 2016 it moved into an even larger home downtown. Today, visitors can learn about the history of SPAM, its surprising popularity around the world, and the role it played during World War II.

I still can’t tell you exactly what’s in it. But after visiting the museum, I can tell you there’s a lot more to SPAM than meets the can.
