South of the Border. No Problemo Pedro.
South of the Border.
No Problemo Pedro.

It’s pretty hard to miss the exit to South of the Border. There’s no way you couldn’t notice the giant billboards lining the highway for miles and miles. And when you finally arrive, a giant sombrero rises into the sky to welcome you.
SOBs, as it’s often called, was the brainchild of Alan Schafer. Back in the 1950s, he began importing Mexican souvenirs and gave directions to suppliers as being just south of the North Carolina border. That simple description eventually became the name of one of America’s most famous roadside attractions.
At SOBs, everyone is called Pedro. No, really—it’s on the name tags. There’s also no shortage of things to do. Visitors can ride a glass elevator to the top of the sombrero tower, play a round at the Golf of Mexico, or grab a meal inside a giant sombrero-shaped restaurant.
Whether it’s your destination or just a pit stop, there’s always a lot to sí, señor!
