When I went to see the real Stonehenge in England, I thought it was pretty cool. But I didn’t realize they’d been popping up all over America for years. It turns out you don’t even need a pile of rocks to create one.

The first American version was built by Sam Hill in Washington State in 1930. Since then, others have put their own spin on the idea.

In Virginia there’s Foamhenge, made entirely out of styrofoam. In Nebraska there’s Carhenge, made from old cars. There was even a Stonefridge in New Mexico built from refrigerators, although that one has unfortunately been torn down.

Apparently, there’s something about Stonehenge that inspires imitation. Maybe it’s the mystery. Maybe it’s the shape. Or maybe people just enjoy stacking random objects into circles.

Stonehenges are still popping up everywhere. There may even be one coming to your hometown.
